The congregation gathered outside to witness the lighting of a brazier: the first light. The Easter candle was marked with a cross and the year, and five pieces of incense pressed into the candle to represent the five wounds of Christ. The candle was then brought into the darkened main sanctuary and processed up the main altar, each time the priest intoning, ‘The Light of Christ’. The candles and lights within the church were then all lit from the Easter candle.
Fr John preached a sermon on disappearances, and the enduring human fascination with sudden disappearances. The service finished with an Easter egg hunt within the church.
