St Stephen & St Agnes Church

Making God's Love Known In Windsor

A pilgrim joins our congregation

On Sunday 1 September Bishop Steven, on his pilgrimage, mainly by boat and also walking and cycling through the Maidenhead and Windsor Deanery, was due to join the 10 o’clock all age Eucharist at St Stephen and St Agnes.  His exact time of arrival was unpredicted.  IN the event, as the altar party processed down the aisle for the proclamation of the Gospel (Luke 14.1,7-14) he arrived without ceremony and was quietly greeted by the Revd June who was presiding.

Following the Gospel he introduced himself and preached an inspiring sermon, reminding us among other things, that in difficult times it was really important that we continue to act kindly to others in small ways, giving us his three words – contemplation, compassion and courage.

The service continued as normal with his joining the congregation for communion.  At the end he blessed the church.   He came to the entrance, leapt on a bench and chalked the letters C + M + B and 2019 on the wall.  The letters are Latin for ‘May Christ bless this house’ followed by the date.

Afterwards he photographed the font and stayed, clearly enjoying chatting to some of the congregation over drinks.

We were so pleased to welcome our diocesan Bishop and to share in the blessing ceremony, at the end of which he prayed a moving prayer embracing all our churches.
